The Abyss is an aquatic biome added by the Calamity Mod which spawns upon world creation. It is located under the Sulphurous Sea on the Dungeon side of the world through a chasm on the seafloor. It is extremely deep, dark, and perilous, filled with deadly enemies, which increase in strength as the biome grows deeper.

Basically every single thing that lets you breathe/move in water extends your duration in the abyss. Flipper and gills potion is a given. The medalion from the desert scourge is also good. That vanilla swimming kit will do in pre hardmode. You can also be smart and abuse potions of return, but you almost never need to be in the abyss for that long.
