    • Championship Manager: Season 97/98 (1997, PC) Sports Interactive’s series looms like a Colossus over all management games. Despite being derided by small-minded dullards as a glorified Excel spreadsheet, Championship Manager‘s masterful tactical engine, reams of accurate data (this was the first instalment allowing you to run more than one league simultaneously) and giant player database wove together a rich, convincing football universe that sat parallel to our own – and it fired the imagination like no other game around.

    • Argentina 3-3 France (Argentina win 4-2 on penalties) The game of the 21st century? While allowing for 'recency bias', which tends to tilt our judgement more favourably towards recent events, this winter we were treated to an all-time classic World Cup final in Qatar, which can justifiably lay claim to being the greatest ever played.
    • Italy 4-3 West Germany - 1970 World Cup semi-final. Chiefly remembered for its scintillating final act, in which a Pele-inspired Brazil beat Italy 4-1 at the Azteca, Mexico '70 also produced an unforgettable classic in the semi-finals.

The north London derby never fails to disappoint and the matchup in 2012 has been one of the best in recent times. Spurs looked like they would cruise to a victory when they went 2-0 up within 34 minutes. But, in typical Spurs fashion, they conceded five goals without reply to lose a seven-goal thriller.

Bayern went into the game having thrashed Barca 4-0 in Germany a few weeks before. They then went to Catalonia and smashed their opponents 3-0 to complete a record Champions League semi-final aggregate win. Arjen Robben, Gerard Pique (OG) and Thomas Muller all got themselves on the scoresheet.

Arsene Wenger named a weak starting XI for his side's trip to Old Trafford and they were made to pay. One of the worst days in Arsenal's history.

Monaco looked like they would take a lead back to France when Radamel Falcao made it 3-2 to the French side after 61 minutes. But Pep Guardiola's side scored three times in 11 minutes to earn the victory. City would still lose the tie though, as a 3-1 win for Monaco in France sent the Premier League side packing.

What a game this was. Liverpool and Arsenal both played weakened sides for their fourth round Carabao Cup tie. No one would have thought it would turn into one of the most dramatic games of the decade. Divock Origi scored in the 94th minute to make it 5-5 and Liverpool would go on to win the 10-goal thriller on penalties.

Spain's dominance in world football came to an end when the Netherlands smashed them in their World Cup group stage game. Spain went 1-0 up after 24 minutes but the Netherlands scored four times in 46 minutes to pull off a shock. The game featured an iconic diving header from Robin Van Persie.

Atletico took the lead in the Champions League final through Diego Godin, only for the game to go into extra-time following Sergio Ramos' equaliser in second-half stoppage time. Real Madrid pulled away in extra-time to win their first Champions League title in 12 years.

Reading were 4-0 up after just 35 minutes in their League Cup last-16 tie with Arsenal. But Arsenal fought back to score four unanswered goals themselves to take the game into extra-time. The Gunners would then score three more times in extra-time to win a seven-goal thriller.

Ajax looked like they would contest the Champions League final when they went 3-0 up on aggregate against Tottenham. But Lucas Moura would score three second-half goals, his third in the last second of the game, to complete one of the best Champions League comebacks in history.

Liverpool's dramatic comeback against Barcelona earlier this year only ranks 11th on the list. Trent Alexander-Arnold's quick corner will be remembered for decades to come.
