Beams are physical forces that hold up the Dark Tower. Like the Dark Tower, they are infinitely old, created at the beginning of the Universe and are themselves living entities (all male and brothers), having arisen from the Prim.
A beam is one of the six metaphysical girders that support the Dark Tower at the center of existence. They are incredibly old and have been in existence since rising from the Prim. The six beams cross like the spokes of a wheel, and are guarded at their ends by twelve Guardians.

The general idea is that Roland needs to rescue the beams and free the tower from the Crimson King. So one could say, several entities are on the "same level of power", not literally, but in principle: The Crimson King is trapped at the tower, but Danville can eradicate the Crimson King, and Roland could bring all the strands together.
