Jul 26, 2023 · What are the curses God promised Israel for disobedience? Answer. In Deuteronomy 28, God provides a list of blessings for obedience in verses 1–14 followed by a list of curses for disobedience in verses 15–68.
- Resistance / Opposition. In an attempt to correct a wayward person’s behavior, God may cause the person to encounter resistance or opposition: “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.”
- Scarcity. Also in an attempt to correct a person’s wayward behavior, God may cause scarcity in that person’s life: “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.”
- Infertility. If these steps do not correct a person’s wayward behavior, God may withhold His blessing of fertility, either through one’s business (symbolized by flocks), one’s endeavors or through the person’s family: “Cursed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock.”
- Failure. If these steps do not correct a person’s wayward behavior, God may also withhold His blessings of success. Without Him, your business or your endeavors may meet with failure: “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.”
