- SATA is slower than NVMe. M.2, on the other hand, is actually a type of form factor. You can find both NVMe M.2 SSDs and SATA M.2 SSDs in the wild. Sometimes product advertisements or summaries use “M.2 SSD” to imply an NVMe drive and “SATA SSD” to indicate the presence of a 2.5-inch form factor SSD.

The main difference between a SATA and NVMe M.2 SSD is the interface technology and levels of performance. A SATA M.2 SSD still uses the SATA-based interface technology which doesn’t improve its speed and performance unless it’s an NVMe M.2 SSD.
Generally, an M.2 drive that utilizes NVME will be much faster than a standard 2.5″ SATA SSD, while an M.2 drive that utilizes SATA will perform about the same as a 2.5″ SATA SSD. However, it’s important to understand that this entire comparison is motherboard & interface dependent.
SATA vs. M.2 SSD – SATA is a bus type and M.2 is a form factor. The M.2 WD Blue SSD offers the same performance as the 2.5” version without the need for SATA power and data cables. Even better is the fact that there’s no price premium for the M.2 version.
