  2. Jun 25, 2024 · Labour has a straightforward plan for policing and criminal justice. When you call the police, they should come. When you report a crime, it should be properly investigated. Justice should be delivered and criminals should be punished. Prisons should not be academies of crime.

    • Economy. New fiscal rules: Labour has said it will give more power to the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) and implement “tough fiscal rules” to ensure economic stability.
    • Energy. £28bn green energy pledge: Labour has been forced to deny it is dropping plans to spend £28bn a year on green initiatives due to the state of public finances.
    • Health. Two million extra NHS appointments: Speaking at his party’s conference in Liverpool last October, Sir Keir said he would spend £1.1bn per year ensuring an additional 40,000 out-of-hours appointments each week in a bid to clear the growing NHS backlog – which would be funded by scrapping non-dom tax status.
    • Environment. Crackdown on water bosses: Shadow Environment Secretary Steve Reed told i that water executives responsible for illegally dumping raw sewage would be personally pursued by Labour with criminal sanctions.
    • Increase health budget by 4.3% The party also wants to cut private provision in the NHS. The 4.3% per year rise is at the top end of what health think tanks and analysts have been calling for.
    • Hold a second referendum on Brexit. Labour will renegotiate a new Brexit deal within three months, and hold a referendum on the deal or Remain within six months.
    • Raise minimum wage from £8.21 to £10. It would boost anyone over the age of 25 earning the minimum wage, known as the National Living Wage. The Conservatives had already announced the living wage would gradually increase to £10.50 over the next six years.
    • Stop state pension age rises. Pension age would remain at 66 while retirement ages for those in arduous and stressful jobs will be reviewed. Not long ago, government number-crunchers suggested workers under 30 may not receive a state pension until they turned 70.
