- SUM. This is the first function in Excel that most new users need. As the name implies, the SUM function adds up all the values in a specified group of cells or range.
- COUNT. Next up is the COUNT function. It returns the number of cells containing numeric values within the input range. Syntax: =COUNT(value1, [value2], …)
- AVERAGE. The average of a list of numbers is just the total divided by how many numbers there are in that list. This is easy enough to calculate the quiz scores.

Worksheet functions are categorized by their functionality. Click a category to browse its functions. Or press Ctrl+F to find a function by typing the first few letters or a descriptive word. To get detailed information about a function, click its name in the first column.
In Excel 2010 or later, these functions were replaced with new functions that provide improved accuracy and have names that better reflect their usage. You can still use them for compatibility with earlier versions of Excel, but if backward compatibility isn't required, you should start using the new functions instead.
