Nov 10, 2023 · Dark chord progressions captivate listeners and draw them in with intrigue and a combination of: Minor chords; Diminished harmonies; Occasionally twists (major chords) The uniqueness of dark chord progressions lies in their power to evoke a wide range of emotions, from melancholy and sorrow to suspense and eeriness.

The first group of 4 chords, Cm Fm Bb G, you can actually just keep looping these 4 chords and use it as a chord progression on its own. You’ll notice it’s very similar to the chord progression used in “Apologize” by One Republic. 3 out of the 4 are actually the exact same chords. I love this chord progression because it sounds so good even if you ...
The second group of chords, Ebm Abm Db Bb, you can also loop and use as a standalone chord progression. Furthermore, you can lump them together with the first four chords we went through.
The last four chords, F#m Bm E Am, you’re also able to loop. Now, you have three groups of four chords that you can use standalone or linked together to get the full progression.
- C minor – Ab major. If there was one drill chord progression to rule them all, this would be the one. C minor to Ab major keeps things simple enough. But, it boasts enough movement and power to justify a heavy hitting beat over top.
- Ab minor 7 – Eb7sus2 – Eb minor. Adding sevenths and extensions to minor chords is another way to bring more color and texture to your drill chord progressions.
- Ab major – G major – C minor – Eb major. Use this progression if you’re looking to start your drill chords off on a brighter note. It carries an uplifting emotional feeling.
- Eb minor – Ab minor. This is one of the coldest progressions in music. It’s only two chords, but it can inspire any potential beat to slap hard. Moving from minor chord to minor chord will always create a dark and sinister sound.
- i VII iv v. I found this one while listening to the Donnie Darko soundtrack. In his instrumental tracks, Michael Andrews creates some incredibly haunting, dark sounds.
- i III VII IV. Speaking of Donnie Darko, it’s the movie that made Mad World one of the most popular dark songs ever. And this is the chord progression that makes it all work.
- v VI v VI v VI v iv i VI i VI. I found this one while listening to a playlist on Spotify called “Dark Synthwave” and this dark chord progression comes from a song called Covenant by Electric Dragon.
- i VII VI v. It may come as a surprise, but even country music can be dark. This set of chords comes from a song called Slow Farewell by Raphael Lake and Royal Baggs.
Jan 21, 2023 · What are dark chords? It's when we mix harmony with dissonance that things really start to sound devilishly dark. So, for example, throw a minor second (♭2 or ♭9) interval in to a major chord (i.e. moving the octave root up by a semitone) and suddenly that bright and warm major sound gets an injection of tension and darkness.
