Moonfleet. Written by John Meade Falkner. Review by Henriette Gyland. This is a first-rate adventure story, beautifully set in an 18th-century Dorset fishing community, with tales of skulduggery, smuggling, hidden treasure, greed, treachery, and true love: all the ingredients for a good old yarn.
When I came to myself I was lying, not in the outer blackness of the Mohune vault, nor on a floor of sand, but in a bed of sweet, clean linen, and in a little whitewashed room, through the window of which the spring sunlight streamed. Oh the blessed sunshine, and how I praised God for the light!
Ray Winstone leads a gang of smugglers in our brand new family drama, Moonfleet. Written by Ashley Pharoah (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes), this two-part adaptation of the much-loved John Meade Falkner novel is set in the small Dorset village of Moonfleet.
Everyone in the tiny village of Moonfleet lives by the sea one way or another, so it's no surprise when young John Trenchard gets involved in the smuggling trade. Forced to flee England with a price on his head, John little guesses the adventures and trials he will have before he sees Moonfleet again or the change in his fortunes when he does.
A gothic melodrama set in England during the 18th century, the film is about John Mohune, a young orphan (Jon Whiteley), who is sent to the Dorset village of Moonfleet to stay with his mother's former lover, Jeremy Fox.
