  2. Jul 3, 2024 · What's Fair: And Other Short Stories is a series of three short stories by Ben Shapiro and, to be fair, it is poor. It was an Amazon Kindle only publication of 37 pages, released in 2015. It seems to have been withdrawn from Amazon, perhaps because Shapiro couldn't stomach the onslaught of bad reviews.

    1. "King Midas and the Golden Touch" Adapted From Ovid

    King Midas is very rich and loves gold. His wish is to be able to turn whatever he touches into gold. One day his wish is granted. Read "King Midas and the Golden Touch"

    2. "Harry and the Haystack" by Unknown

    As Harry leaves home to play ball with John, his mother reminds him not to play on the haystack. It's dangerous, as it could collapse at any time. Harry and John amuse themselves as long as they can with various games. Eventually, their attention turns to the haystack. Read "Harry and the Haystack"(PDF Pg. 3)

    3. "Please" by Alicia Aspinwall

    A little boy demands things without saying "please". His older brother is very polite. One morning at breakfast, something unusual happens that makes the older brother even more mannerly. Read "Please"

    While Aesop's fables are excellent examples of short stories with lessons, they're very well known. I'll only include a few here. If you like these selections, it's easy to find lots more.

    Many of the following stories are also good for children, but the writing level and content make them suitable for adults.

    • The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf. A shepherd boy was tasked to watch over his master’s flock of sheep in a dark corner of the forest. With no one else around and with nothing else to do but tend to the sheep, things got very dull and boring very fast.
    • The Woodcutter and the Axe. A hardworking woodcutter lived in a small village. Apart from being industrious, he was also very sincere and honest.
    • The Little Boy with a Slingshot. While on summer vacation at his grandparents’ farm, Sammy accidentally shot his grandma’s pet duck with his slingshot.
    • A Boy’s Job Appraisal. A boy walked into a store and went straight to get a carton box to put in front of the telephone. The store owner watched all this with mild curiosity.

    • “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl. While not exactly a philosophical or political tale like our first two examples, this twisty short story from Dahl does delve into some shady moral territory.
    • “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. A perennial feature in many a high school syllabus, Shirley Jackson’s best-known short story clinically details an unusual ritual that takes place in a small town.
    • “How to Become a Writer” by Lorrie Moore. Told in the second person point of view, this story from Moore’s debut anthology Self-Help takes an honest look at the inner life of a struggling artist.
    • “Cat Person” by Kristen Roupenian. In the Social Media Age, no short story has gone viral the way this New Yorker contribution from Roupenian has. Arriving at the height of #MeToo, it begins with 20-year-old Margot embarking on the early stages of flirtation with an older man, Robert.
