In the slums of the upper West Side of Manhattan, New York, a gang of Polish-American teenagers called the Jets compete with a rival gang of recently immigrated Puerto Ricans, the Sharks, to "own" the neighborhood streets. Tensions are high between the gangs but two romantics, one from each gang, fall in love leading to tragedy.

- Russ Tamblyn as Riff. Tamblyn played the snappy, tough guy and Jet leader Riff in 1961's West Side Story. This role wasn't what he intended to play when he first auditioned.
- Rita Moreno as Anita. Moreno played the unforgettable, Oscar-winning role of Anita, Maria's best friend, in 1961's West Side Story. She has had an impressive career and even plays a part in Spielberg's film (although she did not revive her role).
