Jan 23, 2022 · ‘Watcher’: Film Review | Sundance 2022. Director Chloe Okuno's debut thriller stars Maika Monroe ('It Follows') as an expat being stalked, perhaps, in Bucharest.
Watcher is a film that reminds you of some of Hitchcock's works, be it in building a slow-burn suspense drama set in a mysteriously new atmosphere and in the way the lead character is established. Chloe also extracts an excellent performance from Maika Monroe who portrays the "fish out of water" protagonist.
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of 149 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "Although its story may lack surprises, Watcher benefits from director Chloe Okuno's chilling grip on the material – and Maika Monroe's terrific work in the leading role."
