The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event and military engagement in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna reclaimed the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States).

The treaty gave the U.S. undisputed control of Texas, established the U.S.–Mexican border along the Rio Grande, and ceded to the United States the present-day states of California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.
In 1845 the United States annexed Texas and subsequently engaged in a dispute with Mexico over the southern Texas-Mexico border. Texas claimed that its southwest boundary extended to the Rio Grande. Mexico claimed that the boundary was the Nueces River, which is 100 miles (160 kilometers) eastward.

In what came to be known as the Texas Revolution, a hastily assembled army of U.S. settlers had succeeded in chasing the Mexican army away from Texas. The Lone Star Republic would exist for the next ten years, but during that period its claim of independence would never be accepted by Mexico.
When the United States annexed Texas in 1845, Mexico severed relations with its northern neighbor. U.S. President James K. Polk sent diplomat John Slidell on a secret mission to Mexico to negotiate the disputed Texas border and to purchase the New Mexico and California territories.
Revolution Breaks Out: Battle of Gonzales. On October 2, 1835, the Texas Revolution began as tension boiled over and shots were fired in the town of Gonzales. The Mexican Army had been sent to recover a cannon that was loaned to the town for protection against aggressive native tribes.
