Ricimer [a] (/ ˈ r ɪ s ɪ m ər / RISS-im-ər, Latin: [ˈrɪkɪmɛr]; c. 418 – 19 August 472) was a Romanized Germanic general, who ruled the remaining territory of the Western Roman Empire from 456 after defeating Avitus, [3] until his death in 472, with a brief interlude in which he contested power with Procopius Anthemius.
Ricimer as a general (a magister militum) is comparable to other figures like Augustus or Aurelian, who came to power when Rome was in a major period of crisis. Crises naturally had many effects on what kind of person could rise to power and what the focus of their regime would be.

Ricimer was probably, from the beginning, in a fairly high position among the Romans, and it seems that from early on he had some sort of personal link with the upper‐class Italian Majorian. 21 They almost certainly served together in the imperial army.
Ricimer’s main focus was the defence of Italy, and while he was often ruthless, in the context of Roman political intrigue this hardly makes him unique.8 Much has been made of whether Ricimer ultimately intended to become emperor himself.

His maternal grandfather was the Gothic king Vallia (see goths), but his career was entirely Roman. He came to power after the assassinations of *Aetius(1) and *Valentinian (3) III, forcing *Avitus to abdicate (ce 456) and elevating *Majorian in his place (457).
