Ned Kelly. Edward Kelly (December 1854 [a] – 11 November 1880) was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police-murderer. One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the police.

In 1948, a new biography of Ned Kelly was published. It called him ‘Australia’s son’ and that rang true. More than a simple bushranger, Ned was now a symbol of the nation, or as biographer Max Brown wrote at the time, he represented ‘the seal of manhood’ that would ‘never cease to ring in Australian hearts’.
