The Disney family is an American family that gained prominence when brothers Roy and Walt began creating films through the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, today known as mass media and entertainment conglomerate The Walt Disney Company.
Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901, the fourth of five children born to Elias and Flora Call Disney. His father, a strict and religious man who often physically abused his children, was working as a building contractor when Walter was born.
Together, Walt and Lillian had two daughters – Diane Marie Disney, born in December 1933, and Sharon Mae Disney, born in December 1936. Diane went on to marry Ron W. Miller, becoming Diane Marie Miller before her passing in 2013. Sharon married Robert Brown and later remarried William Lund.
For some time, Walt and Lilly struggled to start a family, but in December 1933, they were overjoyed with the birth of their first child, Diane Marie. Three years later, Diane got a little sister, Sharon Mae. Walt held that a man should never neglect his family for business.
Their marriage produced two daughters, Diane (born December 1933) and Sharon (adopted in December 1936, born six weeks previously). [ 161 ][ x ] Within the family, neither Disney nor his wife hid the fact Sharon had been adopted, although they became annoyed if people outside the family raised the point. [ 162 ]
