Apr 28, 2012 · When his mother, the spirited family matriarch, is diagnosed with dementia, Igami must come to terms with the toll his own behavior has taken on his increasingly distant family and resolve his own long-simmering resentments.
The new situation brings with it an unexpected change as Kosaku, who was not in fact brought up by his mother and has never got on well with her, begins to establish a bond. Ironically, this happens just as the two daughters decide they can no longer stand her and her infantile outbursts.
Waga haha no ki explores themes such as conflict and resentment, death and absence, and is a window into the culture, values and part of the Japanese idiosyncrasy. It's a beautiful film about the cycles of life and memory.
