Sub fusc (from the Latin sub fuscus meaning very dark) should be worn beneath your academic gown and is also required when sitting examinations. Sub fusc and the wider academic dress code at Oxford is solemn and modest, in line with our ceremonies, and traditionally comprised of plain black dress.
The relevant gown (s), hood (s) and mortar board may be hired from Wadham College; Wadham has only a limited number of gowns, hoods and mortar boards for hire. Please therefore contact the Lodge Manager on lodge@wadham.ox.ac.uk to discuss your order no later than 4 weeks before the ceremony.

Wadham offers college accommodation for each year of your undergraduate study, set within breath-taking gardens and outdoor spaces. This includes our recently completed Dorothy Wadham Building for second years, in vibrant East Oxford on Iffley Road.
Formal hall is available five nights a week - no dress code (wear what you like!) except for Thursdays which are suit + tie (or equivalent) plus gown. Catering staff are exceptionally friendly, so formal is a great experience.
University members wear academic dress at University ceremonies, examinations and some official meetings. Each degree has a black gown and hood proper to it.
