Jun 20, 2023 · Sham 69 is an English punk rock band formed in 1975 in Hersham. They are one of the highest charting bands in British punk with a total of five Top 20 singles. They split up for the first time in 1979 after which frontman Jimmy Pursey went on to pursue a solo career.
The band currently features alongside Tim V, the bands longest serving drummer at 38 years behind the kit for Sham 69, Ian Whitewood. Paul Brightman plays lead guitar and joined for the bands’ US Tour in 2016 and Al Campbell who joined the band in 2009 plays bass.
Sham 69 are an English punk rock band that formed in Hersham in Surrey in 1975. They changed their musical direction after seeing the Sex Pistols play live in early 1976. They were one of the most successful punk bands in the United Kingdom, achieving five top 20 singles, including " If the Kids Are United " and " Hurry Up Harry ".

The name "Grass Roots" (originally spelled as one word "Grassroots") originated in mid-1965 as the name of a band project by Los Angeles songwriter and producer duo P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. Sloan and Barri had written several songs in an attempt by their record company, Dunhill Records (owned by Lou Adler), to cash in on the budding folk rock movement.
