  2. The Angeles set is a good cross-section of her recordings, although some very desirable items are not included, such as her terrific Antonia in Tales of Hoffmann, to mention only one. But what’s here is very good indeed, beginning with some mono Puccini from the 1950s and closing with a sample of her famous 1973 Hunter College recital with Alicia de Larrocha.

Born on Nov. 1, 1923, the soprano studied voice and guitar at the Barcelona Conservatory, graduating at the age of 18. She actually gave her operatic debut at the Liceu in Barcelona in 1941, when she was still a student.

Never the most temperamental of singers, she was born to this music, offering vocalism of exceptional beauty and simplicity that never becomes arch or cloying, as so often happens in other hands (and throats).
