Jan 4, 2018 · For her series “Immediate Family,” she shot her three children (Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia) in vulnerable positions at their summer home in rural Virginia. The ensuing criticism the images received questioned the line between pornography and fine art and problematized the objectification of children.

Chantal Joffe’s highly personal self-portrait with her daughter, Esme, is set on the beach at St Leonard’s where the artist’s mother lives. Joffe worked from a photograph; she takes many photographs or asks others to, with the possibility of them becoming subjects for paintings.
In her individual and group portraits of women and girls, Joffe explores themes from childhood and adolescence to motherhood, confronting in each case the physicality of the human body and the complexities of human emotions. This exhibition presents over 50 works, highlighting Joffe’s distinctive contribution to contemporary figurative painting.
