From pregnancy to birth, growing up to growing old, Chantal Joffe's intimate portraits capture the evolving stages of life and (mostly) female relationships.
In this exhibition, co-curated by the artist, portraits of Joffe’s daughter – dating from shortly after her birth to recent depictions of Esme at the age of 16, painted during lockdown – are displayed alongside a number of self-portraits, and a series depicting Esme’s care of her mother during a traumatic illness.
Chantal Joffe’s The Squid and the Whale (2017) depicts two figures sitting on the edge of a bed, one almost obliterated by the other. The figure in the foreground, naked but for a pair of pants, is hunched, with a wide expanse of pale back and a small, beetle-like head. Behind, a child sits upright, taut, her face puckered with anxiety.
