Vasily Katanyan was a Soviet literary historian who was best known as an authority on the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Of Armenian origin, Katanyan grew up in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) before returning to Moscow, where he became a figure in a circle of notable writers and artists that included Mayakovsky.
