Varaždin was the seat of Varaždin County of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, ruled by the Kingdom of Hungary after the compromise of 1867. The Hungarian stamp, issued in 1881 shows both names.
History. King Bella III. mentions Garestin (Varaždin) for the first time in 1181 in a legal document and in 1209 the Hungarian king Andrew II. declares Varaždin a free royal borough. The town starts to develop around the old fortress in a shape of a medieval Wasserburg, which helps in Turkish raids.
The county contains the city of Varaždin, the towns of: Ivanec, Ludbreg, Lepoglava, Novi Marof and Varaždinske Toplice, as well as 22 municipalities. It covers an area of 1,262 square kilometres (487 sq mi) and had a population of 175,951 in the 2011 census.
