Apr 1, 2023 · The ditch was begun on the northeast side, although the actual location is unclear. Jacob Piat Dunn, in his history of Indianapolis, describes the ditch as rising near present day 24th Street, just east of the Monon Trail.

The Kankakee country represents essentially an intermorainal marsh reclaimed valley extending from South Bend, Indiana, southwestward to Momence, Illinois. Down the wide, flat-floored valley coursed the original meandering Kankakee River, now a series of straight ditches.
