The show is about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al), the Afghan interpreter who served with his unit and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

Two months after the announcement of the pilot, in December, Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young were cast in the roles of Awalmir and Riley, the leading characters on the show. In 2020, Dean Norris, Kelli Goss, and Elizabeth Alderfer joined the series, with Farrah Mackenzie being cast in January 2021.
