  5. 1869 established. 500 W. County Line Rd. ☰ SEE METADATA. Founded in 1869 on the former John Boddie plantation, the historically black coeducational Tougaloo College began as a normal and agricultural school of the American Missionary Association, a northern abolitionist group.

  6. The college is located between two small streams that flow into the Pearl River near Jackson, Mississippi. Tougaloo was founded by the AMA in 1867 in cooperation with the Freedmen's Bureau. It was the first private, predominately African American, voluntarily-integrated college in the state of Mississippi.
