Nov 22, 2023 · Toadstool Geologic Park and campground is part of the Nebraska National Forests and Parks system. Located in the NW corner of Nebraska amidst the Oglala National Grasslands, this obscure little park represents another installment of badlands in this part of the country.
Many wildflowers await the visitor to this unique geological feature. Species encountered in the spring are Missouri milk vetch (Astragalus missouriensis), shell-leaf penstemon (Penstemon grandiflorus), gumbo lily (Oenothera caespitosa), and death camas (Zigadenus spp.).
Oct 22, 2017 · This day and age, the landscape at Toadstool Geologic Park looks pretty barren, but around 30 million years ago the land was home to a wide range of wildlife. It’s said that giant tortoises, pigs, miniature horses, rhinoceroses, and early camels once roamed this land.
What a fantastic place to hike and explore, easy to moderate for all of the trails, with beautiful panoramic vistas, unique geological formations, and abundant wildlife. . This is one of the best places I have gone for solo hiking in years.
This geological park is a gem down a gravel road in Western Nebraska. The little campground has a few permanent picnic tables with covers and camping pads, a bathroom, but no park rangers or staff. Entrance to the trails is free.
