A Synopsis. Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen lives in Copenhagen in 1943, during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. She and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, have encountered the German soldiers patrolling the streets and have experienced the shortages imposed by the war but do not yet realize the threat to their safety that the Nazis pose.
