I personally have a ranger that uses a bow and a homebrew paladin that uses crossbows. Its really up to you which you like better. As far as multiattack at higher levels, look up Bianca, Varic's crossbow from Dragonage.
Once you take the Crossbow Mastery feat, Crossbows tend to deal more damage on average. Because you get to ignore the loading property, and make another attack as a bonus action. So at level 5 with a +5 DEX, assuming all your attacks hit: Longbow - two attacks, 1d8 (4.5) + 5 each, average of 19damage per turn.
Oct 1, 2020 · You can dual-wield hand crossbows if you want to, or you can wield a melee weapon and a hand crossbow. Bards can use a hand crossbow as a ranged weapon and still keep a hand free for spellcasting (or playing music). In theory so can paladins and rangers, but they have better options.
Dec 4, 2019 · I’d suggest giving bows the Finesse property. A crossbow is drawn by mechanical power, so the effectiveness of a shot is all about precision (dexterity). But a bow is drawn by manpower alone, and how much damage you can do with one has as much to do with the draw weight you can handle (Strength).
Apr 19, 2017 · It could be argued that the weapon that hits the creature is the arrow and not the bow, but it's just not how the game works. The resistance against non-magical weapons itself is less logical than having magic bows attacks count as magic weapon attacks regardless of the type of arrow, anyway.

With the English *trained* in using the Longbow, and with the Longbow's greater range and rate of fire, well...
