- Libero. As mentioned, the libero is a defensive specialist, meaning they don’t attack the ball. Their primary role is to serve-receive, pass, and dig up the ball.
- Left-side, or power, hitter. The left-side hitter is named because when the three front-court hitters are lined up facing the net, the home position for the left-side hitter is on the left, in position 4.
- Middle hitter. You guessed it, the middle hitter hits from the middle of the court, in position 3! Middle hitters tend to be the tallest players on the court, as they do most of the blocking, and height is definitely an advantage for blocking.
- Right-side hitter. Following the naming pattern that’s been established, the right-side hitter hits from the right side of the net, in position 2. The right-side hitter is definitely an under-rated role.
- The Setter (S) As the name suggests, the setter ‘sets’ up offensive shots for their teammates, making their role extremely significant. In a way, we can say the setters control the game, often communicating via sign language while leading their teammates in offensive or defensive plays.

- The Middle Blocker (MB) Middle blockers usually require less skill than other positions, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t important. As a middle blocker, you have one job to do: blocking enemy attacks.
- The Outside Hitter (OH) Outside hitters own the court’s left side and are often responsible for the strongest attacks. Their shots are precise, fast, and incredibly difficult to block, making them the strongest attackers.
