Odin recognizes them but begins to ramble about Asgard not being real and Ragnarok and Hela’s arrival. He then transfers his power as king to Thor, and Hela arrives.

During an Instagram Live where he watched Ragnarok (and talked to guests Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo), Waititi explained the scene was changed largely because they needed to set up Norway as a potential location for New Asgard.

In terms of the scene itself, I am so glad they went with the scene we got in the theatrical release. This alleyway scene is so rushed, and too on the nose with its blatant cliche foreshadowing. But that little father son moment, with Odin actually voicing his feelings towards Loki, would have been amazing in the actual movie.
