    Jackson said he used “computer power to erase the technical limitations” of the 100-year-old footage to “see and hear the Great War as they experienced it”, and the mastered images pull the viewer firmly into the picture.

    Using audio clips from men who had served in the war was a vital part of the film. Jackson said: “I wanted to reach through the fog of time and pull these men into the modern world, so they can regain their humanity once more – rather than be seen only as Charlie Chaplin-type figures in the vintage archive film.”

    Grading colour into the images often makes the pictures far more arresting. This one, in particular, seems more haunting when made “real” – the soldier smoking the cigarette really seems to lock eyes with the viewer.
