Nelson's 'Map book of the world wide war', 1917, is one of the items on display. John Buchan started 'The thirty-nine steps' while he was unwell in bed during the early months of the First World War.
The result, 'The thirty-nine steps', proved an immediate success. It's a contemporary shocker set very precisely in a few weeks in May and June 1914, before the outbreak of war. The hero is Richard Hannay. Published first as a serial in the summer of 1915, and in book form in October, over 25,000 copies were sold in the first three months.
An obvious suspect, Hannay flees to his native Scotland, pursued by both the police and a cunning, ruthless enemy. His life and the security of Britain are in grave peril, and everything rests on the solution to a baffling enigma: what are the 'thirty nine steps?'
