Monkey Rhythm was the name of Adam's previous band and the initial name of The Spent Poets. The new name was selected during the recording of the self-titled album, with a brief interlude as The Holy Ghost People. The second album (Steve, recorded by Gates/Greenberg/Winegar) was shelved by Geffen when the band was dropped.
To provide some context for the pages to follow, here's a brief history of the Spent Poets. In the late 1980's, Adam Gates and Matt Winegar began recording song demos on Matt's Tascam 388 1/4" 8-track machine.

Jan 14, 2023 · The Spent Poets unjustly register as a relative blip in the fast-paced and short-attentioned 90s, regretfully a footnote in the iceberg for funk-metal freaks. But their slavish devotion to ambitious pop perfection resulted in a sophisticated tour de force that deserves to be held in the same regard with contemporaneous endeavors of the period like Spilt Milk , Toy Matinee , and Nonsuch .
