Salvia is a genus of about 960 species of herbaceous and woody plants. In California, native salvias can be found growing along the Pacific Coast, crossing inland valleys, and threading their way up rocky mountain slopes. There are 17 or 18 sages native to California, and they are visited by hummingbirds, bumblebees, wasps, and bees.
Salvia apiana, the Californian white sage, bee sage, or sacred sage is an evergreen perennial shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, found mainly in the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California and Baja California, on the western edges of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. Metric tons of white sage (Salvia apiana) are being poached to supply an international demand. This plant is deeply rooted in the cultures and lifeways of the Indigenous communities of Southern California and northern Baja, the only region where white sage naturally occurs in the world.
Black sage is the most common sage in California. Though less showy than other salvia species and cultivars, it is an important food source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The flowers are small and pale blue-lavender in color.
Purple sage Salvia leucophylla from California is drought tolerant and its lavender flowers attract butterflies. Baby sage Salvia microphylla from Mexico is grown extensively for its red, pink, or white flowers and fruit-scented leaves.
