Native salvia foliage are known for their distinctive fragrances, often with grayish square stems, and colorful two-lipped flowers arranged in whorls or spikes on flower stalks. The flowers generally come in shades of blue, purple, lavender, with some white, red, and pinks.
S. sonomensis is found in three distinct areas in California: the California Coastal Range from Siskiyou to Napa county; from Monterey county to San Diego county; and in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It can be found growing under 2,000 m (6,600 ft) elevation on dry hillsides and woodlands.
In California, native salvias can be found growing along the Pacific Coast, crossing inland valleys and threading their way up our rocky mountain slopes. These natives are adaptable to almost any garden condition, provided there is plenty of sunshine and excellent drainage.
