   • We just need the money from the post office asap to so they work out a payment plan for the remainder or the money. There's a form you can get from the Post Office to advise of the death/claim the balance - this is probably the simplest way.

   Can I Close my benefits account at the post office?

   • The man from benefits did say that we could close it at the post office its self as we will need the funds to pay for his funeral asap. You can't do that - it's handled centrally and it takes at least 10 days. Post #2 is close to being spot on. You need to ring them / get a Reference number and that also freezes the account.

   Does a post office account need probate?

   • Unlike the rest of the Post Office accounts which are Bank of Ireland products and suffer from poor customer service, the card account is operated by JP Morgan. I just have a death certificate, the estate is very small, not likely to be enough to cover the cost of the modest funeral, so our solicitor said probate would not be required.

   Jul 17, 2010 · You need to ring them / get a Reference number and that also freezes the account. You can normally get a form at the local PO ..... you need to put the provided Reference on it and provide death certificate and ID for yourself + nominated Bank account for the funds to go into.
