Father Gabriele Amorth is getting a sequel.
According to Bloody Disgusting, a sequel to The Pope's Exorcist is now in early development at Sony with Russell Crowe expected to return as the Vatican's leading exorcist. While no other details of the sequel are known at this time, it seems we may have a new horror franchise on our hands.
The Pope's Exorcist, which released on April 14, has made a killing at the box office despite only being in theaters for less than two weeks. It has currently racked up $52 million worldwide on a budget of around $18 million, signaling a big score for the studio.
The film also had some stiff horror competition to beat out at the box office. Universal's Renfield was released on the same date, but it has struggled to bring in audiences so far. Renfield has made just north of $18 million at the box office, a lackluster number when you consider the film cost reportedly $65 million to make. It also had a larger marketing presence behind it. Oh, and Nicolas Cage as Dracula was sure to draw in some real Cage-heads.
Despite all of these supposed draws to Universal's horror-comedy, it seems Russell Crowe reigns supreme.
The Pope's Exorcist sees Crowe as the real-life exorcist Father Amorth as he investigates the posession of a child and uncovers a secret the Vatican has been trying to keep secret for years. The old-school demonic horror film was directed by Julius Avery, who helmed 2018's Overlord. The film received mixed reviews upon release, with our review giving it a 6/10.
"You can do much better than The Pope's Exorcism, but when exploring the depths of an increasingly stale exorcism horror subgenre, you can do worse as well," IGN's Matt Donato writes. "Russell Crowe is hammier than an Easter dinner as Father Gabriele Amorth, spitting out Italianized dialogue that Chris Pratt could learn from for the inevitable Super Mario Bros. sequel and creating some strong accidental comedy."
