In the 2005 novella The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus, Canadian author Margaret Atwood retells the well-known story of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey from a different point of view: the wife of Odysseus, Penelope, and the twelve Maids he murdered upon his return home to Ithaca.
He tells the legendary tale of the shroud that Penelope wove for the eventual funeral of Odysseus' father, Laertes, the former king now living on a farm where he grieves his son's absence. Considering the attack on his mother, Telemachus remains surprisingly calm in his rebuttal.
He explains that a god is on his side and makes her swear to make no mention of it to his mother, at least until after twelve days have passed or Penelope has discovered the news herself ...
Penelope promised to choose a husband once she finished weaving a shroud for Laertes, but in order to postpone the day of decision, she wove the shroud by day and unwove it at night. When one of her maids betrayed her secret to the suitors, they forced her to finish her web.
