Jul 11, 2023 · I have watched the movie "The Ninth Gate" several times. I am stumped on one of the three books Corso mentions when he is evaluating the Manhattan collection of the poor man in the wheelchair. His daughter and son-in-law are wanting quick cash for his collection.
- In the film, the ancient book, The Nine Gates, displays an inverted pentagram on its cover to represent its Satanic content. However, the inverted pentagram only became associated with Satanism and evil in the late 19th century, due largely to the work of the French occultist Eliphas Levi.
- All engravings appearing in The Nine Gates were commissioned for the novel by author Arturo Pérez-Reverte himself. The only exception is the one showing the girl riding a dragon, which was altered to make it appear similar to The Girl’s (Emmanuelle Seigner) face.
- The cigarettes that Liana smokes are called Black Devils.
- Johnny Depp didn’t take his usual $10 million dollar fee for the chance to work with director Roman Polanski.
All the explanations I've watched and read in youtube and in forums go in depth in the occult/philosphical/religious symbolism and imagery in the movie, but fails to give a practical sum-up of the plot. So what actually happens?

The Ninth Gate's ending has often been criticized, but a deeper look reveals a more thought-provoking angle to the film.
