Its inspiration, immortalized in the film Topsy-Turvy, has become legend: W.S. Gilbert was pacing his study, racking his brain for a new idea, when suddenly, a crash startled him out of his thoughts.
Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (the Japanese emperor), has fled in disguise to avoid marrying a much older suitor, and to find and marry his own beloved, the beautiful Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum, however, is the ward of Ko-Ko, the lord high executioner, and has become betrothed to him against her will.
PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS. Most of the principal roles double as the characters of Gilbert, Sullivan, D’Oyly Carte and members of the D’Oyly Carte company. These historical figures appear in the prologue, and then become the characters in the operetta.
