The red shoes. There was once a little girl who was very pretty and delicate, but in summer she was forced to run about with bare feet, she was so poor, and in winter wear very large wooden shoes, which made her little insteps quite red, and that looked so dangerous!
Inspired by the sight of the princess wearing a pair of bright red shoes, Karen persuades the old lady to buy her a pair of red leather shoes in the shop. The old lady agrees, but only because her eyesight is so bad that she cannot tell what colour they are.
