An English army officer who resigns his commission to become a Resident Magistrate in the West of Ireland, Major Yeates finds himself living in a ramshackle old manor house surrounded by local community's colourful inhabitants.
The major receives an offer to become R.M. in a community closer to Dublin. Upon hearing of the offer, Mrs. Cadogan and the rest of the household think it's a joke. But unexpected frustrations cause the Major to resign.
The whole way of life at Skebawn is threatened when the Major receives an offer to take the position of R.M. in another community closer to Dublin. Upon hearing of the offer, Mrs. Cadogan and the rest of the household think the very idea of the Major leaving is a fine joke.
