A film version of the same name was made in 1949 by Anthony Pellisier, with John Mills as Polly. It was adapted by the BBC as a six-part television serial shown between 28 August – 10 October 1959, with Emrys Jones as Polly, and again as a five-part adaptation starring Andrew Sachs, shown between 2 and 30 March 1980.

He soon settles into a blissful existence with innkeeper Megs Jenkins (left), working as handyman and ferryman at the pub, with only the landlady and her niece, also called Polly (played by Mills' daughter Juliet) about the place. Although there is one problem, as Polly explains; Uncle Jim.
Synopsis. Based on the novel by H.G. Wells. Quiet and somewhat direction-less, Alfred Polly uses the money he inherits from his father to marry and to set up shop in a small town. His heart is in neither of these enterprises and he eventually resorts to desperate measures to break free.
