The Ghost of Yotsuya Part I is a story based on a play by Nanboku Tsuruya from the 19th century. Both the original play and the film are about a poor samurai who wants to poison his wife in order to be able to remarry a woman from a rich family. After the actual poisoning happens, the woman becomes a ghost who continues to haunt the samurai.
