The First Temptation of Christ. Christ had entered the world as Satan's destroyer and the Redeemer of the captives bound by his power. He would leave an example in His own victorious life for man to follow, and thus overcome the temptations of Satan. Con 36.1 . As soon as Christ entered the wilderness of temptation His visage changed.
THE FIRST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST Today is the first Sunday in Lent, observed by many Christians through 40 days of solemn preparation for Easter. The forty days correspond to the time that Jesus spent alone in the desert without food, fasting, if you will, and being tempted by Satan.
A prophet of Judah learned this lesson the hard way (1 Kings 13:7-9, 15-24). The evil in the temptation was for Christ to satisfy His hunger at the wrong moment (not God’s time) and with a wrong motive (to grant Satan’s request). BASICALLY, Satan was tempting Jesus to act independently of the will of God (cf. John 5:30).
