May 12, 2009 · The place is named after Frederic William Cumberland, an engineer who helped build the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway in 1852 from Toronto to Barrie (then called Allandale). As the Toronto, Simcoe and Muskoka Junction Railway it was extended to Orillia in 1872 and to Cumberland Beach the following year.
