I just read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia (spoilers don't bother me) and it seems that the science team is never explained. Why are they kidnapping random people during a nuclear war? And why those particular people?

The Divide follows a group of survivors after an apocalyptic event, and captures the breakdown of social behaviors and constructs. You get to see where people fall into line, and what leads them to do so. Personally, I could discuss all aspects of the film all day.
