A drunken newspaper editor takes on Silver Creek's newest employer, a large tannery, claiming that the company's by-products are polluting the town's only river. Clay doesn't believe the stories until several townspeople come down with mysterious fevers.
Synopsis. The controversial story is based on Rolf Hochhuth's research into the Vatican activities during World War II. The play's treatment of Pope Pius XII -- the "deputy" of Christ on earth -- and the Church during the Nazi persecution of the Jews made it the object of impassioned praise and violent denunciation.
The story takes place one morning between ten o’clock and noon on 27 June, in a village somewhere in (presumably) the USA. The year is not stated. The three hundred villagers are gathering to undertake the annual ritual of the lottery, which is always drawn on this date every year.
